Are Holiday Greeting Cards Worth It?

The Holidays are right around the corner (they always catch us by surprise) and it is once again time to think about greeting cards. I'm sure we all go through the same thought process each year: This costs how much? I’m gonna have to keep the kids still and smiling for how long?  Is this really necessary? And inevitably…Are holiday greeting cards worth it? At the end of the day, we probably do it for our mom and to appease all our friends who send us their greeting cards. And maybe sometimes we procrastinate or choose not to do it for one reason or another. We get it, we’ve all been there… But we also want to remind you of a few things. Holiday greeting cards are worth it… and not just because your mom likes them (which isn’t a bad reason in the first place) but because they embody an important part of the holiday spirit.

For You

The holidays are fundamentally not about you. Christmas and Thanksgiving are largely about being thankful for and serving others out of the abundance of our own blessings. But just for a moment, I want you to consider that despite the money, the hassle, and the potential meltdowns (from you and your child), greeting cards are a wonderful investment for you. We all have busy schedules and the holidays, for most individuals, only serve to exasperate that reality. It can be hard to be in the moment and even harder to catch it with the quick snapshots that are usually all we have time for. Holiday greeting cards are a built-in excuse to get everyone together and catch an image of this period in life. When else can you get your whole family together, nicely dressed and happy, to take a photo? These are pictures you can look back on for the rest of your life and remember things which were hard to absorb in the moment. They can serve as a catalog of your life from year to year.

For Family

Now, enough about you. There is a reason no one orders a singular greeting card for themselves. We are not wishing ourselves a “Merry Christmas” with strained smiles and a barely restrained dog. Greeting cards are for grandparents who can’t believe how tall Katelyn has grown and didn’t know that Tommy lost his first tooth. These cards are a way to keep family members who love you in the loop and included in your life and the life of your family. A beautiful way of inviting them into your world is to give them a picture of it, saying “We’re thinking of you in this season of gratitude, and we’re glad you’re in our lives.” You and your loved ones may be separated by a great distance and this is just one way for you to bridge that gap with more than text.

For Friends

Much the same principle applies to friends. It can be even more difficult to stay connected to people who aren’t our close family. Our lives are not tied to theirs with the thread of blood and staying in touch can be neigh impossible. Sending out greeting cards is one way to keep these fragile relationships alive. Friendship is a beautiful gift that should be treasured no matter the distance between participants. It can be a great encouragement to receive a snapshot of someone’s life whom you care about deeply. From year to year, you can watch them grow from afar and say, “I love you, I haven’t forgotten.”

We know what many of you are thinking about now. Can’t the same thing be said about a quick and easy selfie sent-over text that costs me nothing? Well, that is one way to get the message across, yes. However, there is something incredibly special about receiving something in the mail. There is an extra level of love that takes the time to capture a photo, stamp it with a greeting of love and thanksgiving, and send it halfway across the world to someone we care about.
